What is PSA Doubling Time (PSADT)?
PSA Doubling Time measures how quickly your PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) level is increasing. Rather than focusing on a single PSA number, PSADT looks at the rate of change over time—which is often more clinically significant.
PSA that jumps from 2.0 to 4.0 in 6 months is far more concerning than PSA going from 4.0 to 4.2 over 5 years, even though the first patient has a "normal" PSA and the second doesn't.
How to Interpret Your Doubling Time
| PSADT | Risk Level | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| >12 months | Low Risk | Slow growth, likely indolent disease |
| 6-12 months | Moderate | Warrants close monitoring |
| <6 months | High Risk | Rapid doubling - urgent evaluation needed |
Clinical Warning
A doubling time of less than 3 months is a significant red flag for aggressive disease and often indicates need for systemic treatment. Always discuss results with your oncologist.
